Summer is officially here! With temperatures rising, we seek solace in cool pools, at the beach and under shady trees. As we enjoy all that Summer brings, it is important to remember that the hot weather can have serious consequences for our canine friends.
Dogs can easily overheat in hot weather, as their only natural ways of cooling down is by panting and via small sweat glands between their toes. (Have you ever wondered why your dog insists on putting his paws in the clean water bowl? It’s to cool down, not just to make a mess!)
Here are five simple ways to keep your furry family members cool as the barometer rises
1. Water. Water.
Make sure you keep our dog’s water bowl topped up throughout the day, with fresh, clean and cool H2O. On really hot days, keep a few water bowls in the house and outside and add some ice cubes to keep the water super cool,
Soak a towel in water, pop it in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer and voila- you have a wonderful cold towel that your dog can lie on!
3. Be smart about exercise.
Dogs don’t always know their own limits, so make sure you exercise your dog during the cooler hours of the day; first thing in the morning or later at night. Don’t forget that behavioural training is mentally exhausting for a dog, so on the hot days be sure to train your dog inside the house with some treat rewards.
Fill a spray bottle with water and cool your dog by spraying under the legs, on the belly and paws for some instant relief. Be aware though that some dogs may be frightened of the spray action of the bottle so you’ll need to train them to accept this without fear, just like most new things we introduce them to. Alternatively, you can use a wet flannel to wipe them over.
5. Give your dog a Summer hair cut!
Keep your dog’s coat short in Summer and brush them regularly. Not all breeds are recommended to have a short cut however. Be guided by our experienced staff if you’re not sure, as some long coats are actually designed to keep your dog cool in summer and warm in winter! It is not only relaxing but will ensure your dog’s fur is clean, free of undercoat, and matt free. Click here to book a groom today with one of our qualified and experienced Groomers.
Don’t forget you can book your dog into daycare on hot days- it is a great way for them to have fun and stay cool this Summer! (Please remember book before 4 pm the day before so that we can organise our staffing)!
